A CURATED CALENDAR FOR THE CURIOUS SLC EXPLORER
See full event listings at The Blocks Arts District

SLC’s Bus Tours gave us a preview of their hop-on, hop-off experience, which officially begins today. For $45 you get a 24-hour pass to jump on and off the bus at designated spots all over Downtown and up to Hogle Zoo. Plus there is a great history lesson as you travel. If you have friends in town, this is a great way to show them around.

Puccini’s Madam Butterfly gets a well-deserved reimaging with a new production at Utah Opera. Many of ballet and operas’ beloved works are steeped in racist or misogynistic themes (Carmen, La boheme, and The Magic Flute). The new production follows Puccini’s gorgeous libretto, but has been created by Japanese and Japanese American designers and reclaims the narrative from a Japanese perspective, addressing cultural stereotypes while preserving the moving story, music, and emotional depth.

Utah Opera’s thoughtful reproduction and investment in their artform for a new generation should be applauded. Friday + Sunday, Capitol Theatre

Sorry to name drop. We recently had drinks with Amos Lee at a baseball game. No Big Deal (j/k, it was a very big deal). Long story short, the very-down-to-earth and acclaimed singer songwriter is a huge fan of Salt Lake, he enthusiastically name-checked some of his favorite bakers, baristas, and bartenders. So we are excited to hear his soulful voice WITH the backing of the Utah Symphony. Just one show at Abravanel Hall, 7:30.

You’re driving home, windows down from a wildly exhilarating party with a big silly grin on your face. Those are the feels in Nightly’s music. Hear those good vibes at The Depot $35, 7pm

It is Mother’s Day! Treat your mama to brunch at Rouser, inside the new Asher Adams, try the smoked salmon egg benedict at Copper Canyon Grill, the $5 mimosas and bloody marys at Flanker, or the lobster frittata at The Capital Grille–just make that reservation now, so you aren’t stressed out Sunday!

We are loving the slight tweaks The Green Room has made recently. The bar has a new groove as an all-vinyl listening joint. Griff (one of our favorite Downtown bartenders) was spinning Latin jazz on a random Wednesday as we sipped a Jungle Bird–a pre-made cocktail on-tap–with dark caribbean rums, campari, cappelletti bitters, and demerara sugar. It’s a lightly sweet and bitter libation, both sophisticated and easy to drink.

The Green Room is easy to miss (maybe by design?) but it’s worth the journey to 17 East 400 South.

We want to feature your fun!
