Perennial favorites Grandaddy Dean's BBQ pulled pork, Mama Linda's chile verde, and wheatgrass from Sunbridge Growers were featured as top ten lunches at Farmers Markets around the nation. Our market ranks side-by-side with markets in famous foodie cities like San Francisco, New York, New Orleans, Miami and more. Cooking Classes Culinary guru Marguerite Henderson is offering a cooking class at the Farmers Market, Saturday, September 11. Classes begin at 9 a.m. at…

Urban Livability

Written by Jason Mathis
Nearly 14 years ago, I sold the only car I’ve ever owned—a 1991 Toyota Tercel that had no air conditioning or radio. I was too cheap to pay for them, so I just rolled down the windows in the summer and hummed a lot. Since then, I’ve been mostly on foot, relied on public transportation and shared a car with my wife. Given my off-tune humming, it’s a surprise that she agreed to marry me. At the time, giving up my car seemed like a radical, scary idea – but it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.…

Downtown Diva at the Harvest Market

Written by Danica Farley
Tuesday evenings at historic Pioneer Park is the place for autumn harvest! From 4 pm until dusk, farmers, growers, bakers, cheese makers and grass fed beef vendors gather to share the cornucopia of the season. Commuters visit the market on their way home from work, downtown residents enjoy the relaxed vibe and opportunity to converse with vendors and chefs from downtown restaurants purchase fresh, local flavors to create their cuisine. During the harvest season the Farmers Market is abundant with berries, cucumbers, eggplant, peaches, heirloom tomatoes, melons, peppers, sweet corn, squash, pumpkin, cabbage, onions, green beans, potatoes and much more.…

The Downtown Diva visited with Matt Caputo at the award-winning Tony Caputo’s Market and Deli in downtown Salt Lake City (314 West 300 South). Caputo’s offers the finest food from—and inspired by—Italy and Southern Europe. Caputo’s has been an institution in downtown since 1997 and is a destination for locals and visitors—with a lunch busier than anywhere else downtown! With a dedicated clientele and commitment to downtown, Caputo’s has been an important institution, catalyst for change and revitalization in the Pioneer Park neighborhood. With a knowledgeable and friendly staff that has expertise in cheese, olive oil, salami and more, shoppers…

Outdoor Retailer: All Day Every Day

Written by Jason Mathis
Downtown was humming last week as we welcomed back our friends from Outdoor Retailer. The 21,000 people who attend this show twice-a-year fill our downtown, along with hotel rooms across the region. On Friday, the Salt Lake Convention & Visitors Bureau announced that they have signed contracts with Outdoor Retailer to come back to Salt Lake through 2014.  Great news for our community and state! As streetscapes, restaurants, shops and entertainment venues all teem with our tradeshow guests it is easy to be excited about a more urbane city center. There are 7,000 hotel rooms downtown, and they were all…
On July 21st the Downtown Alliance hosted a Downtown Miniature Golf Tournament, Art Auction and Taqueria at Salt Lake Art Center’s Contemporary Masters exhibit. The exhibit, which runs through Sept. 16, consists of 18 fully-playable holes of miniature golf art designed by Utah and national artists. Participants in the tournament included friends from the Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau, Salt Lake Magazine, KTVX, Utah Symphony and Opera, eBay, Salt Lake Chamber, Salt Lake Police Department, local artists and other downtown art aficionados. Frida Bistro provided the food, Vida Tequila offered libations and Squatters Putt Putt Pils was served. There…

O Pioneers

Written by Jason Mathis
Tens of thousands will gather in downtown streets this Saturday for the annual Days of ’47 Parade – the culmination of Utah’s annual founder’s day celebration. 44 percent of Utahns have attended the Days of ’47 Parade at some point.  For some, the parade is the only face-to-face encounter with the state’s urban center. We welcome parade goers and hope they take some time to explore the evolution of our rising capital city. The parade theme Pioneer Spirit – Then and Now is not an accidental choice. There is a clear connection that celebrates Utah’s pioneering spirit and our rising…

Over 30 art and craft vendors will gather along East Broadway during the popular Salt Lake Gallery Stroll. Browsers will enjoy shopping at a variety of unique downtown shops and galleries while visiting a wide range of street vendors offering handmade, local goods from jewelry to clothing and services like massage and henna body art. A Tale of Two Cities

Written by Jason Mathis
Two dramatically different, but important events occurred yesterday in downtown. In the morning, Bishop H. David Burton, Mayor Peter Corroon and Mayor Ralph Becker along with members of the Harmon family and local dignitaries participated in a ground breaking ceremony for the new grocery store at City Creek. As someone who loves, lives and works downtown, it is hard to overstate my excitement about this new store: the last major piece of the City Creek project to begin construction. About eight years ago, my wife and I owned a condominium at the Belvedere, next to the site where the new…
