Think Twice Before Parking In Salt Lake - KUTV2 5/25/10

KUTV2

Ever get a parking ticket in Salt Lake? Well, you’re not the only one. City parking enforcers issue close to 130,000 parking tickets a year.

The total number of tickets issues last year, may be nearly enough to equal a ticket for every man and woman who lives in the city.

Salt Lake Parking Enforcement Officers roll, stop and as a group on weekdays, leave hundreds of calling cards.

Fines mailed in or paid in person at the City Courts Building.

Cabbie Salah Awad says he was in his taxi, in a freight zone, outside a business, waiting for a customer, when he got his ticket.

His fine, a piece of total city parking collections and higher than you might imagine.

2News also asked Gina Chamness, City Budget Director, about parking meters and what the city gets from all the nickels, dimes, and quarters. The city gets about $1.1 million every year from the city parking meters.

From the meters, and in fines, adds up to more than $5 million a year for Salt Lake.

The Downtown Alliance says the city’s coordination of parking both public and private and not to mention meters, could use an upgrade.

Portland it seems also collects much more than Salt Lake $23 million in fees and citations. Mayor’s Spokesperson says new signs for parking, new parking meters in the next few months. In Denver, parking tickets dropped significantly after credit card meters were installed.
