SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – It’s a Christmas tradition that thousand of families far and wide look forward to each year. Friday at dusk the lights lit up at Temple Square and across downtown Salt Lake.

Thousands of people made their way to Temple Square Friday to witness the spectacle. It’s a tradition that dates back to LDS Church President David O. McKay’s tenure in office which was from 1950 – 1971. A tradition many families can’t miss.

“The lights on Temple Square are amazing!” said Jacqueline England.

“It's a time to reflect on the season and the joy and the hope that it brings,” said Christopher Webb.

The work began in August to get ready for the display that covers 10 acres of downtown Salt Lake with more than a million lights.

Wow. That's amazing. A lot of work!” said Christopher and Shannon Webb.

There were even several proposes near the amazing light display. One of the lucky ladies was Danny Michel’s daughter.

“Getting engaged right now and we were part of the process of her being asked!” said Michel.

People posed for pictures and even travel from all around the world. Most people we spoke to have their favorite part.

“My favorite part is around the reflection pool because then you get a full panoramic view,” said England.

The lights will be lit each night throughout December 31st from dusk until 10 p.m. There will also be concerts and performances, most free, each afternoon and evening throughout the holiday season.
