The Pioneer Park Picture Show begins Friday July 30th and takes place every Friday throughout August. The series, presented by the Salt Lake Film Center and the Downtown Alliance, is free in Pioneer Park and movies begin at dusk. Take a blanket, a picnic, and the entire family to enjoy the theme of this year’s movies: Rock Doc’s—Rock and Roll Documentaries. Also, all screenings will be preceded with live music from local bands.

Some of the films are:
Soul Power: In 1974, the most celebrated American R&B acts of the time came together with the most renowned musical groups in Africa for a 12-hour, three-night long concert held in Kinshasa, Zaire. Featuring performances from James Brown, Bill Whithers and B.B. King amongst others.

Strange Powers: Stephin Merrit & the Magic Fields: Stephin Merritt is know as the "Cole Porter of his generation" for his memorable melodies, lovelorn lyrics and wry musical stylings. Shot over a period of 10 years, this film explores his friendship recording and songwriting process. The film traces a 20-year career that has yielded one of the most engaging bodies of work in the contemporary American songbook.

A full schedule is available at www.downtownslc.org.

Also rocking at The Gateway are concerts at The Depot. The English Beat will perform on August 10th. They always play an entertaining show that is a flashback to the 1980’s when the British ska band first became popular.

On Saturday, August 14 the 2nd annual Craft Lake City—an outdoor arts festival hosted by SLUG_Magazine—will be from 2-9 p.m. at Gallivan Plaza. The event is free and will showcase over 130 artists specializing in handmade goods like silk-screened posters, reconstructed clothing, knitted items and jewelry. Entertainment will be provided throughout the day and will include craft demonstrations, street performers, belly dancing, and musical acts like Red Bennies and Muscle Hawk. Details can be found online at craftlakecity.com.

The Downtown Farmers Market continues every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Pioneer Park. This week the Tuesday evening Farmers Market begins at the park, 4 p.m. to dusk, through October. The abundance of local summer produce has arrived and the Tuesday evening market offers a place to buy your favorite fruits and vegetables mid-week.

There is a statewide contest for Utah’s favorite Farmers Market. Visitors to the market rave about the event being a favorite summertime activity. Please visit our Web site to vote for the Downtown Farmers Market as your favorite.

There are family-friendly activities everyday in SLC—it’s the place for summer fun!
