City Creek Center's First Holiday Season (about.com)

Monday, 19 November 2012 09:30

Downtown Salt Lake's City Creek Center is ready to celebrate its first holiday season, with decorations, entertainment and events that will likely become holiday traditions for many Utah families. Some traditions are new, including four magical storybook lanterns, and some are revivals of old traditions, including spectacular displays in the windows of Macy's department store and Deseret Book. Here are some of the highlights of City Creek Center's holiday celebration:

Christmas tree - the City Creek Center's Christmas tree near Nordstrom is 30 feet tall, weighs almost 2,000 pounds, and is decorated with more than 12,000 lights.

The Transcend fountain in Richards Court will feature three new holiday shows: "Carol of the Bells," "Nutcracker," and "Let It Snow." These will play at the top of every hour. At 7 and 9 p.m., all three shows will play in succession.

Four storybook lanterns featuring four different holiday stories are positioned throughout the center. These giant lanterns combine exquisitely hand-crafted and exciting animated elements.

Four 18-foot wreaths hang throughout the center, each with almost 10,000 lights.

Storytellers will perform at the at the City Creek Center Christmas Tree, on the Skybridge, and at the fireplace. Fridays and Saturdays starting Nov. 16; Thursday, Friday and Saturday starting Nov. 29; extra performances Monday, Dec. 24. Performances start at 3 p.m.

Santa visits and photos will be available in Santa's magic lantern starting Nov. 16. Santa has a virtual line at City Creek - register at the check-in booth and then receive a text message when it's your turn.

Signing Santa will be available at City Creek Nov. 29 from 2-6 p.m., so deaf children can visit with Santa.

Santa will take photos with pets Dec. 6 from 6-9 p.m.
