There’s a new kid in town – a fat kid, actually.

Opening this week, Maxwell’s brings Fat Kid Pizza—a New York-styled thin crust— to the heart of the city, along with other traditional Italian fare. The Park City restaurant’s urban extension occupies the ground floor of the historic Boston Building at Exchange Place. With exposed brick, original copper windows, and a mosaic of historic floor coverings, Maxwell’s hopes to inspire a lounge vibe that is still friendly for all kids—regardless of body shape or size.   

Maxwell’s joins a virtual parade of other new kids who have made their way to the City Center over the past few months. Without a doubt, downtown is in the midst of a top-to-bottom food and beverage bonanza—reinforcing our role as Utah’s most dynamic neighborhood.  New downtown hot spots range from Bourbon House a cozy and comfortable lounge in the basement of the Walker Center, to the open air rooftop patio of Green Pig Pub. The reincarnation of Bar X on 200 South incorporates a chic new aesthetic, with celebrity cred in the form of co-owner Ty Burrell.  Acme Burgers is gone, with the space reinvented as Hapa Taqueria and the Sand Bar on Pierpont Ave has evolved into Café Inferno.

Certainly, downtown has chain restaurants—many good ones, in fact.  But what sets the urban center apart from other communities is the diversity of unique restaurant choices. Breaking bread with family or friends in a unique locale creates a special bond, difficult to replicate in any other circumstance. And no matter your taste or budget, the city offers memorable, one-of-a-kind food-centric experiences. 

Last month, seventeen restaurants were highlighted in the first ever downtown “Tastemakers” event, presented by Salt Lake Magazine and sponsored by the Downtown Alliance.  The event sold out days in advance and helped to introduce hundreds of Utahns to the diversity of restaurants in the heart of their Capital City. Happy people strolling the streets of the city from restaurant to restaurant, brought back Olympic memories (but with smaller crowds and warmer temperatures). 

Speaking of warmer temperatures, we now enter  the season of outdoor festivals, concerts and events.  The remarkable Farmers Market started last week, the Utah Arts Festival is next weekend, Twilight Concerts are just around the corner and a new concert series has launched for the soon-to-be-finished Gallivan Plaza. Each event offers compelling food and entertainment choices that add to the tapestry of downtown dining.

There are a thousand reasons to celebrate the city this summer.  At the Alliance, we’ll continue to promote the food culture that helps to define our Capital City, creating even more ways to strengthen relationships and build our community through the power of food, friends and family.
