The Downtown Alliance enthusiastically promotes an Arts and Cultural District in downtown Salt Lake City. This district would accommodate performing arts centers, urban housing, hotels, art galleries, retail shops, and commercial space.
The purpose of the downtown Arts and Cultural District is to develop a dynamic and prosperous community lifestyle. By offering educational experiences, economic expansion, and enriching events, the district will contribute to the successful development and revitalization of Utah’s capital city.
Focusing on blocks 69 and 70, south of City Creek Center (West Temple to State Street, 100 South to 200 South), the proposed Arts and Cultural District will capitalize on the proximity to existing cultural, convention, and visitor facilities, new retail and housing, and accelerate change in the heart of downtown.
Economic benefits of the Arts and Cultural District will be abundant. There is clear direction for public and private investment, new jobs are created, additional tax revenue is generated, extra public parking is built, hotel and hospitality enhancements will support the Salt Palace Convention Center needs, extra goods and services will be available downtown, historic buildings will be renovated and reused, and significant private dollars will be leveraged by public funds.
Creating this mixed-use environment will integrate with present and future developments downtown, support expansion for established arts and cultural organizations, encourage new arts presentations and spaces, and restore the essence of Main Street by using key historic buildings. The Arts and Cultural District will enhance the metropolitan way of life and economic growth in our great state.

HVS International, a leading global hospitality consulting organization based in Chicago, Illinois, has completed a market study on the feasibility of a downtown art and culture district. The funders of the study--Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Downtown Alliance, and Salt Lake Chamber--will now work to implement a downtown arts and culture district that will enhance Salt Lake's exceptional cultural assets.
